THE STORY

Reported Haunting

The former Key West home of Ernest Hemingway is said to be haunted by the author and his second wife, Pauline Pfeiffer. Reports include Hemingway's apparition on the veranda and near his writing room, a female apparition near the staircase, and the unexplained sound of an old-fashioned typewriter.

Ernest Hemingway lived at the Whitehead Street house during the 1930s with his second wife, Pauline Pfeiffer. After Hemingway's death in 1961, stories developed that the author had returned to the Key West home he loved. Southern Most Ghosts recounts reports of Hemingway's apparition standing on the second-floor veranda, sometimes appearing to wave to passersby. Tour guides and visitors have also reported seeing a male figure moving through the house and grounds, particularly near Hemingway's writing room. Phantom typewriter sounds have reportedly been heard there during quiet morning hours. Pauline Pfeiffer is also said to haunt the property, with a female apparition reportedly appearing near the staircase.
