THE STORY
Reported Haunting
The bridge is said to be haunted by Eunice Williams, who was killed near this crossing during the forced march that followed the 1704 attack on Deerfield. Witnesses report seeing a woman searching for her family beneath the bridge, and legend claims that honking on a moonless night may cause her apparition to appear.
The present Eunice Williams Covered Bridge is a twentieth-century reconstruction near the place where Eunice Mather Williams reportedly died in 1704. Williams, her husband, and several surviving children were among the Deerfield residents taken captive during a French and Indigenous raid. Weakened during the forced winter march toward Canada, she fell while crossing the Green River and was killed. Her spirit is now said to wander beside the river and beneath the bridge while searching for her separated family.
