THE STORY
Reported Haunting
The steep streets and preserved Victorian buildings of the Eureka Springs Historic District are associated with numerous local ghost stories. Visitors report footsteps, voices and unexplained activity in old buildings and along the town's stairways after dark.
Much of Eureka Springs was placed on the National Register of Historic Places as the Eureka Springs Historic District. Developed largely during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, the district contains hotels, commercial buildings, houses, springs and steep stairways that preserve the character of the old resort town. Ghost tours and local folklore attach paranormal stories to numerous locations throughout downtown, with reports that include footsteps, voices, shadowy forms and unexplained disturbances. Because this is a district-wide entry, the marker represents the historic downtown rather than one single haunted building.
