Evergreen Cemetery is famous for the legend of Midnight Mary, whose spirit is said to appear near her grave at midnight. Visitors have reported seeing a glowing female apparition, hearing unexplained whispers, and witnessing strange lights in the cemetery after dark. The story has made the cemetery one of Connecticut's best-known paranormal destinations.
Some local tales say Mary was accidentally buried alive, and was later dug up to reveal bloodied nails showing she had tried to free herself before suffocating to death. Others say she became a ghost hitchhiker after her death, and yet others say that she was a witch in life and those who visit the grave at midnight will come face to face with her ghost.
