THE STORY
Reported Haunting
Fenwick Hall's best-known ghost legend tells of Ann Fenwick and a stable hand named Tony, whose forbidden romance supposedly ended in his hanging; later stories describe Ann's voice and footsteps and a headless rider crossing the property.
Fenwick Hall is a major eighteenth-century plantation house on Johns Island. Its long-running ghost legend centers on Ann Fenwick and Tony, a young groom or stable hand. In the traditional story, the couple eloped against her father's wishes and Tony was hanged after they were caught, with some versions saying the noose decapitated him. Later occupants and storytellers describe footsteps and a woman's voice calling Tony's name, while another version places a headless horseman riding through the marshes around Fenwick Hall. The romantic tragedy is legend rather than established documentary history, but it has been attached to the property for generations. Fenwick Hall is private property and is not a public ghost-hunting site.
