THE STORY
Reported Haunting
The historic bank site is associated with the 1904 shooting death of cashier Ira O. Middaugh. Later accounts describe an apparition of an old-fashioned man appearing behind a bank president's desk and then vanishing.
The corner of Sheridan Avenue and 12th Street was the site of the First National Bank of Cody when an attempted robbery occurred on November 1, 1904. Bank cashier and part-owner Ira O. Middaugh was shot during the robbery and later died from his wounds. The present Walls Bank Building was constructed in 1920 on the same site. Decades later, paranormal lore developed around the property, including an account from a bank employee who reportedly saw an old-fashioned man sitting behind the bank president's desk before the figure suddenly vanished.
