THE STORY

Reported Haunting

Fredriksten Fortress is one of Norway's most famous haunted fortresses. Visitors have reported apparitions of soldiers, phantom footsteps, unexplained voices, and the ghostly White Lady wandering the grounds. Centuries of warfare have contributed to the fortress's enduring paranormal reputation.

Fredriksten Fortress in Halden is associated with the apparition known as Den Hvite Dame, or the White Lady. According to The Hidden North, she was the mistress of a fortress commander whose lover was killed by a cannonball fired by attacking Swedish forces. When his remains could not be recovered, she reportedly died by suicide after jumping from the fortress wall. Her apparition is now said to appear near the white tower at midnight.
