THE STORY

Reported Haunting

Knoxville ghost lore associates the Gay Street Bridge with an unexplained recurring light malfunction and the spirit of a man said to have died near the Tennessee River crossing, although the commonly repeated 1815 origin story predates any bridge at the site.

The Gay Street Bridge spanning the Tennessee River opened in 1898 and is one of Knoxville's best-known historic structures. Local ghost tours have long included a mysterious story involving the bridge, particularly a tradition that one of its lights repeatedly flickers or goes dark despite attempts to repair the problem. Some modern retellings attribute the activity to a man supposedly killed while fleeing a mob in 1815. That date cannot literally refer to a death on the Gay Street Bridge: the present structure did not open until 1898 and the first permanent bridges at this crossing were built after the Civil War. Ghost Atlas therefore treats the claimed spirit and electrical disturbances strictly as later folklore rather than verified history. Following structural repairs, the bridge reopened in December 2025 for pedestrians and bicyclists only; motor vehicles are prohibited.
