THE STORY
Reported Haunting
The Georgetown Lighthouse on North Island is linked to the legend of a keeper's daughter named Annie, whose apparition is said to appear near the light or on passing vessels as a warning before storms.
South Carolina's historic Georgetown Lighthouse stands on North Island at the entrance to Winyah Bay. Local ghost lore tells of Annie, the young daughter of a lighthouse keeper, who allegedly drowned after a storm forced her father to swim ashore with her tied to his back. Stories say Annie later appeared around the lighthouse and aboard nearby vessels, sometimes before dangerous weather. Other reports include phantom footsteps and an unseen presence in or around the tower. The Annie narrative is folklore rather than established history, but it is a long-running part of the lighthouse's local haunted tradition. The tower is not generally open for casual public entry and the site is best approached through authorized access or boat tours.
