THE STORY
Reported Haunting
Gettysburg National Cemetery, originally known as Soldiers' National Cemetery, is the final resting place of thousands of Union dead and later veterans. Visitors have reported ghostly figures, mysterious lights and other unexplained activity among the graves.
Gettysburg National Cemetery was created after the Battle of Gettysburg to provide a permanent resting place for Union soldiers killed in the July 1863 fighting. It was dedicated on November 19, 1863, when Abraham Lincoln delivered the Gettysburg Address. In later folklore, visitors have described indistinct human figures, soldier-like apparitions and unexplained lights within or near the cemetery. These reports are not historically verified paranormal events, but they form part of the much broader ghost tradition surrounding Gettysburg's battlefield and burial grounds.
