THE STORY

Reported Haunting

Local folklore claims that the ghost of Revolutionary War commander Francis Marion, the legendary "Swamp Fox," still rides through the remote South Carolina swamps where he and his militia once evaded British forces. Snow's Island, Marion's best-known wilderness stronghold, is closely associated with the legend.

Snow's Island is a remote area of swampy lowlands along the Great Pee Dee River in Florence County, South Carolina. During the American Revolution, Brigadier General Francis Marion used the island and its surrounding waterways as a refuge and base of operations for his militia. Marion's knowledge of the Lowcountry terrain allowed his men to launch sudden attacks against British and Loyalist forces before disappearing into the swamps. British cavalry commander Banastre Tarleton famously pursued Marion without success, helping give rise to Marion's enduring nickname, the "Swamp Fox." Modern folklore adds a supernatural chapter to the story, claiming that Marion's spectral figure can still be seen riding through the same dark swamps where he once vanished from his enemies. The specific ghost story is sparsely documented and should be regarded as local folklore rather than a well-attested haunting tradition.
