Ghost lore predating the modern hotel describes footsteps, moaning and the apparition of an officer named Belyaev-Tolstoy.

According to local tradition, an earlier inn on this site was already considered haunted. The apparition of a murdered officer was reportedly seen there, and stories claim the activity continued after the Grand Hotel Europe replaced the earlier building.
