THE STORY
Reported Haunting
The Greenbrier's best-known spirit is Lydia, the legendary ghost bride said to have died after believing she had been abandoned on her wedding day. Reports associated with the restaurant include apparitions, voices, cold spots and unexplained movement.
The Greenbrier occupies a historic property in the hills above Gatlinburg that began as a hunters' lodge. Its best-known ghost story centers on a young woman called Lydia. According to longstanding local lore, Lydia was preparing to marry at the lodge when her fiancé failed to appear. Believing she had been abandoned, she supposedly hanged herself from a beam inside the building. Staff, guests and paranormal investigators have since associated the property with apparitions, unexplained voices, cold spots and objects moving without explanation. The old beam connected with the Lydia legend has also become part of the restaurant's ghost lore.
