THE STORY

Reported Haunting

The best-known Hampton ghost story concerns John Henry Rutledge and a rocking chair said to move by itself after his 1830 death. Later visitors have also described a lingering presence in the house.

Hampton Plantation preserves an eighteenth-century Lowcountry plantation house and grounds. A longstanding family and regional ghost tradition concerns John Henry Rutledge, who died after a self-inflicted gunshot wound in 1830; stories say his rocking chair later moved on its own and that his presence remained in the house.
