The historic Hancock County Courthouse stands in the center of Greenfield, Indiana. Local ghost lore collected by Indiana paranormal author and historian Al Hunter associates the courthouse and surrounding square with several apparitions and unexplained phenomena. Generations of Greenfield residents are said to have witnessed a figure called the "Yellow Man" looking out from the courthouse bell tower. James Whitcomb Riley, Greenfield's famous poet, has reportedly been seen on the square accompanied by the ghosts of two young children said to have been murdered on the courthouse lawn. Witnesses have also described hearing the phantom echo of a shotgun blast along the National Road on the north side of the courthouse, traditionally linked to an earlier tragedy.
