THE STORY
Reported Haunting
Local legend surrounds the western Kentucky crossroads where the severed head of notorious frontier outlaw Micajah "Big Harpe" was displayed as a warning around 1800.
Micajah "Big Harpe" and Wiley "Little Harpe" terrorized the Kentucky frontier during a brutal crime spree in the late 1790s. After Big Harpe was pursued and killed in 1799, his head was severed and brought to this crossroads near present-day Dixon, where it was displayed as a warning to other outlaws. The location became known as Harpe's Head, and the surrounding road carried the name Harpe's Head Road. The site remains deeply rooted in western Kentucky folklore and is sometimes listed among the region's allegedly haunted locations. Specific recurring paranormal phenomena at the crossroads are poorly documented, so Ghost Atlas classifies the story as a Local Legend rather than a verified haunting.
