THE STORY

Reported Haunting

The historic Hartford Elks Lodge has been associated with reports of unexplained activity since the organization occupied the ornate building in the early 20th century. Visitors have described strange noises and other disturbances attributed to unidentified spirits believed to linger within the lodge.

The Hartford Elks lodge moved into this ornate building in 1903, and is believed to be haunted. Some say the ghost is a deceased member, perhaps Samuel Chamberlain, watching over his former–er, haunt. Others say the spirit may be a man who was found dead on the sidewalk outside in 1972. Witnesses say they can feel the entity in the building, and some have heard voices and footsteps and seen tables moving by themselves. Lights are known to go on and off in the building as well. One report stated that the daughter of a member was approached by an apparition who told her to “Get out!” The building was featured on an episode of TV’s Ghost Hunters.
