THE STORY

Reported Haunting

The legend of the Headless Indian Chiefs at Walker's Town tells of ghostly Native American warriors seen along the Apalachicola River. Witnesses have reported headless apparitions, mysterious lights, and unexplained sounds in the area after dark. The story remains one of Florida's oldest regional ghost legends.

During the 1830s in the Indian village called Walker’s Town, incidents led to the death of two Native American chiefs. The deceased chiefs’ heads mysteriously came into the possession of a Dr. Joseph R. Buchanan of Cincinnati, Ohio, who thought he could learn from the dead by studying their skulls. No one is certain what eventually became of the two men’s heads. Legend has it that the restless spirits of two decapitated Native American chiefs walk here on foggy nights, looking for their heads.
