THE STORY

Reported Haunting

Oakwood Cemetery in Spartanburg is widely known in local ghost lore as "Hell's Gate." Visitors have reported a Woman in White, children's laughter, mysterious orbs and mist, sudden cold spots, feelings of dread, and electronic equipment inexplicably losing power or malfunctioning.

Historic Oakwood Cemetery is one of Spartanburg's oldest burial grounds and has developed one of South Carolina's most enduring cemetery-haunting reputations. The older portion of the cemetery is commonly nicknamed "Hell's Gate." Reported phenomena include disembodied children laughing, flashing orbs moving among the graves, white mist, unexplained cold air, feelings of sadness or dread, and electronic devices suddenly draining batteries or malfunctioning. One of the best-known apparitions is a mysterious Woman in White said to wander the cemetery, sometimes appearing within a cloud of mist. Local lore sometimes links the paranormal activity to the relocation of approximately 100 graves to Oakwood in 1914. Other stories attribute the name Hell's Gate to alleged occult or satanic activity carried out in the cemetery during later decades. These explanations remain folklore rather than established causes of paranormal activity. Oakwood remains an active historic cemetery and visitors should respect posted hours, graves, funerals, and cemetery regulations.
