THE STORY
Reported Haunting
Raleigh's Historic Oakwood Cemetery is famous in local ghost lore for the Guardian or "Spinning Angel" above the grave of Etta Rebecca White Ratcliffe. Legends claim the remarkably lifelike angel watches visitors with its carved eyes, turns to follow people as they move, and may spin its head twelve times at midnight on Halloween.
Founded in the nineteenth century, Historic Oakwood Cemetery is one of Raleigh's best-known historic burial grounds. Its most famous supernatural legend surrounds the angel monument marking the grave of Etta Rebecca White Ratcliffe. The angel's face was modeled after Etta, who died in 1918. Generations of Raleigh residents have claimed that the statue's eyes appear to follow visitors and that the figure seems to turn as people pass. One Halloween legend says the angel's head revolves twelve times at midnight. Other accounts describe mysterious scratches, stings or welts, while broader paranormal reports from the cemetery include whispers, shadowy figures, cold spots and alleged EVP recordings. The stories remain folklore and anecdotal paranormal reports. Oakwood is an active cemetery and visitors should respect posted hours, graves and cemetery rules.
