The Independence State Hospital served psychiatric patients in Iowa for more than a century before many of its historic buildings were abandoned. Visitors have reported shadow figures, unexplained voices, phantom footsteps, and unsettling encounters throughout the old hospital complex. Its long institutional history has made it one of Iowa's most discussed haunted locations.
