THE STORY
Reported Haunting
The former Nelson County jail, now Jailer's Inn, is associated with phantom footsteps, disembodied crying and other unexplained sounds attributed in local lore to its long history as a jail.
The historic jail at 111 West Stephen Foster Avenue dates to the early nineteenth century and remained in use as a county jail until 1987. The surviving complex now forms part of Jailer's Inn, a bed-and-breakfast and historic attraction offering tours of the original jail. Paranormal reports include unexplained footsteps, crying or other voices and the sensation of unseen occupants within the former cell areas. More dramatic stories about particular prisoners or executions vary considerably, so this entry focuses on the recurring reported phenomena rather than assigning them to a specific individual.
