THE STORY
Reported Haunting
Ghost-tour lore surrounding Beaufort's Verdier House describes an oppressive presence, unexplained disturbances and a spirit traditionally associated with the Verdier family.
The John Mark Verdier House was built around 1804 and is one of Beaufort's most prominent surviving Federal-period houses. During the Civil War it was used by Union forces. Modern Beaufort ghost-tour traditions associate the house with an oppressive or sorrowful presence, particularly in an upstairs room, as well as unexplained disturbances such as shutters or other objects moving without an obvious cause. Some accounts identify the spirit as John Mark Verdier Jr., but published versions disagree about important details of his life and death. The identification is therefore presented as local ghost lore rather than established fact.
