THE STORY
Reported Haunting
The Joshua Ward House is one of Salem's best-known haunted-house legends, with reports of apparitions and unexplained activity. Claims that Sheriff George Corwin tortured prisoners at the property are folklore rather than documented fact.
The Joshua Ward House was built in the late eighteenth century on property associated with former Salem sheriff George Corwin. Modern ghost stories describe apparitions, strange photographs and unexplained experiences inside the house. Some popular accounts claim Corwin tortured accused witches at the site, but that claim is not supported by documented historical evidence.
