THE STORY
Reported Haunting
The medieval ruins of Kilcooley Abbey in County Tipperary are associated with a modern report of a dark shadow figure. During an August 2015 visit, a man inside the abbey felt someone standing behind him before turning and reportedly seeing a dark form rush directly toward him.
Kilcooley Abbey near Gortnahoe in County Tipperary, Ireland, is a ruined Cistercian monastery founded in 1182. The abbey suffered repeated violence during the medieval period, including being sacked and burned in 1418 and again in 1445 before undergoing substantial reconstruction. A modern paranormal encounter was reported by Von Moss, who had frequently visited the estate with his Irish wife because her father had once lived and worked there. During an August 2015 visit, Moss was walking through the interior of the ruined abbey when he suddenly developed the distinct sensation that someone was standing directly behind him. His wife was some distance ahead, so he knew she could not be responsible for the feeling. When he turned around, Moss reported seeing a very dark shadow rushing toward him. He instinctively jumped backward and shouted. His wife immediately recognized that something had badly frightened him and hurried him out of the ruins. Moss later returned to Kilcooley Abbey several times but never experienced the phenomenon again. He did not claim to know what the shadow was, and no particular historical person has been identified with the reported apparition.
