THE STORY
Reported Haunting
Visitors, cowboys and ghost hunters have reported unexplained voices and conversations coming from Kirwin's abandoned buildings, sometimes sounding as though the long-departed mining town has come alive again.
Kirwin is an abandoned mining settlement high in the Absaroka Mountains southwest of Meeteetse. The once-thriving community reached a population of roughly 200 before decline and abandonment followed a devastating 1907 avalanche and the gradual closure of its mines. Kirwin has also developed a strong paranormal reputation. Accounts collected over the years describe voices, moaning, conversations and other sounds apparently coming from empty buildings. Cowboys sheltering in the abandoned saloon reportedly heard what sounded like people talking and arguing around them despite being alone.
