THE STORY
Reported Haunting
The Liberty Hotel occupies Boston's former Charles Street Jail, where guests and storytellers report moans, apparitions, and other unexplained activity within the preserved jail architecture.
The Liberty Hotel at 215 Charles Street incorporates the historic Charles Street Jail, completed in 1851 and closed as a jail in 1990. Modern ghost lore attributes moans, voices, apparitions, and other strange experiences to the former cellblocks and atrium. A Boston Ghosts article gives a specific tale involving a captured German U-boat captain who supposedly died by suicide in a cell, but that detail was not independently verified in the sources reviewed and is omitted here. The surviving jail structure and current hotel are precisely identifiable.
