THE STORY
Reported Haunting
Lilburn Mansion has long been associated with reports of apparitions, unexplained footsteps, children's voices, doors and windows moving on their own, and other strange activity. The mansion's paranormal reputation became especially prominent following a destructive 1923 fire and subsequent rebuilding.
Built in 1857, Lilburn Mansion is a Gothic Revival estate in Ellicott City, Maryland, also known as Balderstone's Mansion and Hazeldene. The property was heavily damaged by fire in 1923 and later restored. Over the years, residents and visitors have reported heavy footsteps in the tower, unexplained voices and cries, doors and windows opening or closing without apparent cause, the smell of cigar smoke, moving chandeliers, and apparitions including a man and children. The mansion has developed a longstanding reputation as one of the better-known haunted properties in the Ellicott City area. The property is privately owned and should only be viewed or entered with permission.
