THE STORY
Reported Haunting
Madison Square is said to be haunted by Sergeant William Jasper and other soldiers connected with the 1779 Siege of Savannah. Visitors and local ghost lore describe lingering soldier spirits and unexplained sensations around the historic square.
Madison Square was laid out in 1837 along Bull Street in Savannah and named for President James Madison. The square contains the monument to Sergeant William Jasper, who was mortally wounded during the 1779 Siege of Savannah. GeorgiaHauntedHouses associates the square with Jasper and other soldiers killed or gravely wounded during the battle, claiming that spirits of the men continue to linger around the site. Local ghost lore also connects the area with mass graves said to contain casualties from the fighting, although some of the more dramatic details of those burial stories are difficult to establish historically.
