The dying groans of murdered smuggler John the Jibber are reportedly heard throughout the grotto, accompanied by poltergeist activity.
Marsden Grotto is associated with the legend of John the Jibber, a gang member and smuggler who was exposed as an informer. According to the story, his fellow gang members placed him inside a barrel and hoisted it up, leaving him to die slowly. His groans are reportedly still heard around the property, and unexplained poltergeist activity has also been reported.
