THE STORY
Reported Haunting
The Wah Hop Store at Marshall Gold Discovery State Historic Park is associated with ghost stories dating to California's Gold Rush era. Visitors have reported apparitions, unexplained footsteps, mysterious voices, and shadow figures inside the historic building. Many believe former merchants still linger at the site.
At Marshall Gold Discovery Park, the Wah Hop and Man Lee Stores, visitors can see exhibits of the remains of a Chinese colony including mining methods, tools and household articles. Reports say phantom sounds abound here, including murmuring voices and the sound of a meat cleaver chopping on a butchers’ block.
