THE STORY
Reported Haunting
McMenamins White Eagle Hotel is one of Portland's best-known haunted hotels. Guests and employees have reported apparitions, phantom footsteps, mysterious voices, and objects moving without explanation throughout the historic building. Several spirits are believed to remain attached to the hotel's colorful past.
The 1905 White Eagle Saloon doubles as a concert venue; acts like ZZ Top, Robert Cray and The Isley Brothers are among those who have played here. History records say in its past days, it had a brothel upstairs and an opium den downstairs, connected to Portland’s underground tunnels that were then frequented by Chinese immigrants. The saloon’s brawls earned it the nickname “Bucket of Blood,” which is spooky enough, but add to it the many apparitions folks have seen, including a man who walked down to the basement every night after closing, or a crying prostitute who had been killed in the brothel.
