THE STORY
Reported Haunting
McMurran Hall is associated with the apparition of an elderly man who is said to appear at night near the clock tower, sometimes peering through the upper shutters.
McMurran Hall was built in the nineteenth century as Shepherdstown's town hall and later served county and educational functions before becoming part of Shepherd University. During the Civil War era the building and surrounding community were drawn into the aftermath of nearby fighting. A long-running local ghost story describes an elderly male figure appearing near the clock tower and looking outward through the upper shutters at night. Some storytellers connect the apparition with the building's Civil War history, but the identity of the figure is unknown and should not be presented as established fact.
