THE STORY

Reported Haunting

The intersection of Merrimon Avenue and Broadway is associated with Asheville's famous "Helen's Bridge" legend and nearby reports of ghostly activity. Witnesses have described apparitions, mysterious lights, and unexplained voices in the surrounding area after dark. The location remains one of Asheville's best-known paranormal hotspots.

James Sneed and James Henry were convicted of stealing a horse and hanged at this crossing in 1835, although they claimed to be innocent. Now, the phantom sounds of horse hooves, a wagon, and a gallows trap-door are heard here.
