THE STORY
Reported Haunting
The site of Michigan’s first state prison in Jackson is associated with ghostly voices, apparitions and unexplained activity reported around surviving historic prison features and the later Armory Arts Village complex.
Michigan’s first state prison opened in Jackson in the nineteenth century. Portions of the former prison property were later adapted for new uses, including residential and arts spaces, while historic walls and prison history remain part of the site. Residents, visitors and paranormal investigators have reported ghostly figures, voices and other unexplained activity. Because parts of the complex are residential, this marker is for the historic prison site and authorized public tours or public areas only.
