THE STORY
Reported Haunting
Mission San Miguel Arcángel is associated with the brutal 1848 murders of William Reed, his family, and others living at the mission, reportedly committed by men seeking rumored hidden gold. Local ghost stories claim that the victims' restless spirits remain at the mission, with apparitions and other unexplained phenomena attributed to the massacre.
According to legend, Mr. Reed bragged about having a hidden stash of gold underneath the mission. It was a fatal mistake, as British pirates killed the Reeds and others who were staying there to get at the gold. Their ghosts are said to linger here.
