Murphys Historic Hotel is said to be haunted by several spirits from its Gold Rush-era past. The best-known is Eleanor, a former chambermaid who reportedly still waits for a miner who promised to return for her. Guests have described apparitions, phantom footsteps, unexplained voices, and other activity throughout the historic hotel.
Boasting an entry in the national registry of historic places, this hotel has hosted many famous names throughout its days. Some believe that some guests checked in, but never checked out as there are reports of at least three different ghostly entities haunting the inn. People claim a mischievous ghost, possibly that of a child, haunts the lobby and first floor with many people claiming to have seen objects moving around. Others believe that the ghosts of a former maid and a prospector who died falling off the balcony also remain haunting the hotel.
