THE STORY
Reported Haunting
The Mystery Manor in Omaha, Nebraska, is famously tied to the dark legend of William Hall, an elite resident who supposedly went insane after the 1929 stock market crash and murdered his wife with an axe. According to folklore, the site is plagued by the spirits of the tragedy, and visitors have frequently reported encountering a mysterious "lady in a blue dress" who wanders the building but is not part of the venue's staff. Though the property long operated as a popular commercial haunted house, the historic structure was permanently demolished by Creighton University.
Built in 1887, Mystery Manor was home to William and Greta Hall. Reports say that when the stock market crashed on October 23, 1929, William Hall lost his fortune and went insane. He attacked Greta with an axe then buried her in the front yard. A week later, Greta’s brother John Martin avenged Greta by chopping up William with the same ax, then burying him next to Greta. But the next night, which was Halloween, John Martin’s body was found at Halls’ gravesite with the same axe in his skull. Some think it was William’s ghost who killed John, as the mystery was never solved. His ghost is believed to roam the manor’s halls every October.
