THE STORY
Reported Haunting
Charlotte's historic Fire Station No. 4 is said to remain occupied by firefighter Pruett L. Black, who died after falling through the station's fire-pole opening while responding to an alarm on April 1, 1934. Later occupants have reported unexplained cigar smoke, feelings of being watched, mysteriously moved objects and sightings of a male apparition walking through the old firehouse.
Built in the 1920s, Charlotte Fire Station No. 4 served the city until 1972 and is now a designated historic landmark. Firefighter Pruett L. Black was fatally injured here on April 1, 1934 when he fell through the second-floor fire-pole opening while responding to an alarm. Decades later, people occupying the building reported smelling cigar smoke despite smoking being prohibited, seeing a full-bodied male apparition and discovering objects moved without explanation. The activity is commonly attributed to Black.
