THE STORY
Reported Haunting
The Old Fort Smith Courthouse is associated with reports of paranormal activity connected to frontier justice. Visitors have reported apparitions, unexplained footsteps, mysterious voices, and shadow figures believed to be former prisoners and lawmen. The courthouse has become one of Arkansas's notable haunted historic buildings.
The old courthouse that still stands here was the sight of many a death sentence handed out in the late 19th century – the hangings occurred just outside. It is said that the ghosts of the condemned men still roam this area.
