THE STORY
Reported Haunting
The former Hazard Appalachian Regional Hospital is said to remain active long after its days as a hospital, with employees reporting unexplained footsteps, apparitions, and other strange activity inside the old building.
The old Hazard Appalachian Regional Hospital, now used as the ARH System Center, has developed a reputation as one of eastern Kentucky's haunted hospital sites. Employees have reported hearing footsteps in otherwise empty stairwells and doors slamming with no one nearby. One former employee reportedly encountered an unknown man who nodded to her before stepping into an elevator. She later realized the elevator had been out of service for more than 25 years, and when she looked again, the man had vanished. Other stories connected to the former hospital include unexplained noises and unusual experiences reported by people working inside the building after dark.
