THE STORY

Reported Haunting

The abandoned tunnel is one of Japan's best-known haunted locations. Its reputation combines a documented 1988 murder with later stories of screams, apparitions, strange handprints and unexplained vehicle trouble.

Old Inunaki Tunnel opened in 1949 and was abandoned after a newer tunnel opened in 1975. In December 1988, a young factory worker was abducted and murdered at the old tunnel by a group of youths. The real tunnel later became intertwined with the fictional Inunaki Village legend. Paranormal stories include a woman in white, screams, shadows and vehicles malfunctioning near the tunnel. The old tunnel is sealed and visitors should not attempt to enter it.
