Reported Haunting
The former Nassau County Jail, now home to the Amelia Island Museum of History, is said to be haunted by Luc Simone Aury, who was reportedly held and died there. Visitors and staff have reported unexplained footsteps, voices, and other disturbances attributed to his lingering spirit.
The old jail, now the Amelia Island Museum of History, is said to be haunted by Luc Simone Aury. Aury was a criminal wanted for murder, rape, robbery and perhaps even more charges, and he was sentenced to hang on the gallows in the back. On the night before his execution, he attempted to avoid the humiliation of hanging by slitting his own throat, but he was caught and crudely stitched up by a surgeon to keep him alive. But when he was hung the next day, the stitches popped open and blood spewed onto the crowd, causing a riot of screaming, trampling, and women fainting. According to locals, Aury’s ghost has been heard moaning in the building, and his apparition has been seen with a bloody gash in his neck.
