THE STORY

Reported Haunting

The old tunnel through Komine Pass is associated with stories of female and child apparitions, footsteps, strange sounds and visitors feeling touched or followed.

Komine Tunnel is an early 20th-century road tunnel on the former route between Hachioji and Itsukaichi. After a newer tunnel opened, the old route became primarily a walking route. Japanese ghost lore frequently associates the tunnel with female or child apparitions and strange sounds. Some internet accounts incorrectly connect the tunnel directly to crimes committed by serial killer Tsutomu Miyazaki, so those claims are not presented as established fact.
