The former road tunnel is associated with sightings of a female apparition and other unsettling experiences reported by pedestrians and cyclists.

Old Manji Tunnel was completed in 1958 and formerly carried road traffic through Manji Pass. After newer tunnels replaced it, the old tunnel was retained as a pedestrian and bicycle route. Japanese paranormal reports commonly describe a woman appearing within or around the tunnel. Despite its eerie reputation, the tunnel remains an active public pedestrian and bicycle passage.
