THE STORY

Reported Haunting

Employees and others have reported seeing a woman dressed in white wandering the basement of Pack's Tavern. The apparition is traditionally associated with the building's Prohibition-era past, when its basement was reportedly used for illegal liquor distribution through underground passages.

Pack's Tavern occupies the historic Hayes & Hopson Building in downtown Asheville, constructed beginning in 1907 and later associated with an illicit Prohibition-era liquor distribution operation in its basement. Staff members have reported unexplained activity in the building, most notably repeated sightings of a mysterious woman dressed in white in the basement. General Manager Tyler Brown has stated that he has personally seen the apparition on several occasions while opening and closing the restaurant. Other reports include unexplained sounds from the basement. Local lore connects the woman in white to the building's Prohibition-era history, though the details of that legend have not been independently verified.
