THE STORY

Reported Haunting

The historic Palace Saloon is said to retain some of its former patrons in spirit, with local legends even naming members of the Rockefeller and Carnegie families among its supposed ghosts. Employees and visitors have reported apparitions, unexplained noises, and other unusual activity within the longtime Fernandina Beach bar.

Built in 1878 as a haberdashery, this building became a bar around 1900. Its original tin ceilings, mosaic floors and much of its design elements remain, as do some of its former patrons. The ghosts of a Rockefeller and a Carnegie are rumored to be among these who linger here, but Uncle Charlie is the most active of the place’s spirit set. Uncle Charlie, a former bartender, lived in the building for more than 50 years. When he passed away in 1960, some maintain he never actually left. Evidence of this may be heard on the old piano, which Charlie has been known to play even though its keys are encased in Plexiglass.
