THE STORY

Reported Haunting

The Peshtigo Fire Museum preserves the history of the deadliest wildfire in American history and is associated with reports of paranormal activity. Visitors have described unexplained voices, shadow figures, sudden cold spots, and an eerie feeling throughout the museum. Some believe spirits of the disaster's victims remain nearby.

The Great Peshtigo Fire of 1871 remains largely overlooked in historical texts, despite the fact that it claimed several thousand lives and razed the township to the ground. However, phoenix-like, the town has risen from the ashes to become a thriving community. A former church which was moved across the river to its current location in 1927 now houses a museum detailing the fire, which is believed by many to be haunted. Visitors have heard ghostly voices, smelt smoke and seen apparitions. There is even an account of a person driving past who called the fire brigade after they saw the church engulfed in phantom flames, although this is highly unlikely as the church was constructed after the actual fires.
