THE STORY

Reported Haunting

Reports at this historic Masonic temple include children singing from the basement, unexplained footsteps and knocks, doors closing without apparent cause, shadow figures, feelings of being watched, and the apparition of a Victorian-era man.

Built in 1784–1785, Queen Street Masonic Temple in Sunderland is believed to be the earliest surviving purpose-built Masonic hall in Britain still being used for its original purpose. The Grade I listed building has also developed a reputation for paranormal activity. Visitors and paranormal investigators have reported unexplained footsteps and knocks, doors apparently closing on their own, shadowy figures, and the apparition of a man dressed in Victorian clothing. One of the most frequently repeated reports involves the sound of children singing or vocalizing from the basement or cellar when no children are present. Others have described the sensation of being watched or followed while moving through the building. The temple periodically hosts organized paranormal investigations.
