THE STORY
Reported Haunting
The 1909 Randolph County Historic Courthouse in Asheboro is said to be haunted by "Miss Laura," longtime county historian Laura Worth. Employees have reported unexplained nighttime noises, rattling sounds, and shadowy figures inside the building, while longtime county workers say unusual sightings have been reported for decades.
The historic Randolph County Courthouse in Asheboro, North Carolina, has been associated with paranormal stories since its retirement from regular court service. One spirit frequently linked to the building is Laura Worth, affectionately known as "Miss Laura," who served for many years as Randolph County historian. Historical records confirm that the courthouse's southwest basement vault became her domain while she worked preserving and researching county records. After the courthouse was renovated for new uses, employees began reporting unexplained activity inside the building. Former tourism director Tammy O'Kelley described hearing strange noises late at night, including what sounded like a metal can rattling. After researching the building's history, she came to believe the activity might be connected to Miss Laura, who was remembered for using snuff and spitting into a tin container. Other county employees have reported seeing unexplained shadowy forms inside the courthouse. Former Randolph County Emergency Services director Donovan Davis said workers had reported unusual sightings in the building for many years. Although no apparition has been conclusively identified as Laura Worth, her long association with the courthouse has made "Miss Laura" the central figure in its modern ghost lore.
